The Trojan hero Aeneas was given the task of founding the city of Rome, but during his travels he was stranded in Carthage, ruled by Queen Dido. The couple fell head over heels in love, leaving Aeneas torn between passion and duty. With a sorrowful heart, Aeneas departed and set a course for Rome. Dido was left behind, inconsolable. She was unable to bear her broken heart and decided to end her life. When Henry Purcell composed his opera Dido and Aeneas, he drew on this rich, emotional story. The lament When I am Laid in Earth, in which Dido says farewell to life, has become one of the absolute highlights of operatic history.

Le héros troyen Énée est chargé de fonder Rome, mais au cours de ses pérégrinations, il échoue à Carthage où règne la reine Didon. Le couple tombe éperdument amoureux, et Énée se retrouve déchiré entre sa passion et son devoir. Énée laisse son amante dans la douleur et se dirige vers Rome. Didon reste en arrière, inconsolable, et décide de mettre fin à ses jours suite à son chagrin d'amour. Henry Purcell s'est inspiré de cette histoire riche en émotions pour composer son opéra Didon et Énée. Le lamento When I Am Laid in Earth, dans lequel Didon fait ses adieux à la vie, est devenu un moment fort de l'histoire de l'opéra.

De Trojaanse held Aeneas kreeg de opdracht om Rome te stichten, maar tijdens zijn omzwervingen strandt hij in Carthago waar koningin Dido heerst. Het tweetal wordt smoorverliefd, maar Aeneas wordt verscheurd tussen hartstocht en plicht. Aeneas verlaat met pijn in het hart zijn geliefde en zet koers richting Rome. Dido blijft achter, ontroostbaar, en besluit uit liefdesverdriet haar leven te beëindigen. Toen Henry Purcell zijn opera Dido en Aeneas componeerde, putte hij uit dit rijke, emotionele verhaal. Het lamento When I am laid in earth, waarin Dido afscheid neemt van het leven, groeide uit tot een absoluut hoogtepunt in de geschiedenis van de opera.
