Short Film Screenings
Many wonderful short films are being made in India. Filmmakers are at work in their own regions, devising bold, new ways to experiment with form and technique. Short Film Corner hopes to be a showcase for these films and open a dialogue between the filmmakers and their audiences.
Raman Kutty Darpok Nahi
Hindi with English Subtitles
(16 mins)
It is the winter of 2001 and Delhi is on edge as fear grips the city. A mysterious entity known as the ‘Monkey Man’ strikes terror in the streets, fuelling mass hysteria and media frenzy. Inspired by true events, this story follows Raman Kutty, a man so insignificant that he is indifferent to his own life. Stuck in a job he’s bad at, alienated from his family, mocked by society, Raman sleepwalks through a monotonous existence. But as the city descends into paranoia, something about this looming terror begins to pull him in. Will Raman and the Monkey Man come face to face and if they do, what happens next?
Directed by Sreeram Pattathil
Daddu Zindabad
Hindi with English Subtitles
(21 mins)
The story is triggered by a dying wish from Daddu, who insists on being cremated at the village cremation ground controlled by a dominant caste. The single demand throws the village into chaos and sparks a quiet revolution. At the centre of it all is Vishnu, portrayed by Pranjal Pateriya (Dupahiya, Laapata Ladies), who must confront his own family and community to fulfil his duty as a grandson.
Directed by Samar Jain
Mr. Francis and the Last Standing PCO
Hindi, Marathi with English Subtitles (16 mins)
In bustling Pune, a lonely old man, Mr. Francis, hears of a mythical phone booth atop the strange ‘Kacharu Bicharu Hills’ that is said to connect calls to heaven. A mysterious lady offers to meet him there, but there’s a price; he must surrender two precious memories of his loved one. Desperate for one final conversation with his deceased wife, Sonia, Mr. Francis sets off on a surreal road trip by rickshaw that challenges what he’s willing to remember and what he’s willing to forget. As he races against time and memory, the line between reality and magic begins to blur.
