About this Event

Local architects Scorer Hawkins will show you the conservation work they've been doing on this At Risk Register heritage building.

The structural repairs and refurbishment to preserve the building include improvements to the roof and the timber frame structure, refurbishment of windows, and external decoration. The hall’s historic features have been restored, including repairs and repointing to the brickwork.

This guided visit will showcase their specialist work before the building is opened to the public.

Building conservation and heritage includes having the right knowledge, skills and techniques, or access to the right specialists, to work on conservation (repair and maintenance) projects and historic or listed buildings and places.

'Shodfriars Hall is situated to the South of Boston's Market Place on an island site between Sibsey Lane and Shodfriars Lane. The earliest portion of the building, a substantial timber-framed structure known originally as the 'Old Flemish House', probably dates from the last quarter of the 14th century. The medieval building was remodelled and a new connected hall, designed in a northern European Gothic Style was built to the east in 1873-75, at which time the site was renamed 'Shodfriars Hall'. The work of the 1870s was commissioned by the Boston Conservative Club to provide clubrooms, shops, offices and a theatrical hall and was completed to the designs of John Oldrid Scott (1841-1913) and his brother George Gilbert Scott Jnr (1839-1897).'

As an historic building, there is no lift access to upper floors, and all visitors should be aware of uneven surfaces and awkward routes through the property.

There are plenty of active travel options to reach the hall Travel | Discover Boston and parking is available in the near by Custom House Quay.
