When Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett painted the floorboards of his London flat blue and orange in 1969, he could never have imagined that over fifty years later, they would be the subject of an intense auction bidding war, end up on display in a venue renowned for its programme of fiercely independent music and be at the heart of an 8-day festival celebrating all things psychedelic.
The painted floorboards graced the cover of Syd’s debut 1970 album, The Madcap Laughs, in what is now an iconic image of the era. Rather than being whisked overseas or hidden in a private collection, the colourful planks are set to be unveiled then displayed at The Piper, a south coast grass roots music venue in St Leonards, near Hastings, named after the 1967 debut album by Pink Floyd, ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’.
The party to celebrate the unveiling of the boards runs from 4th-11th July, the 20th anniversary of Barrett’s death.
