There’s no mystery why the fame of Sherlock Holmes perseveres. The era of gaslight and hansom cabs is long past, but Sherlock Holmes is as popular as ever—in movies, on television, and in print. Next year marks the centennial of the publication of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s final original Holmes story and collection, but the lure of Baker Street is as strong as ever.
What made Sherlock Holmes such a revolutionary figure in detective fiction? And what is it about his methods, character, and cases that continues to captivate readers a century after the final original story? Celebrate 140 years of Sherlock Holmes on January 6, the fictional birthday of the detective, as writer Daniel Stashower, author of Teller of Tales: The Life of Arthur Conan Doyle, turns a magnifying glass on the legendary sleuth of Baker Street and his creator. He’s joined by actor Scott Sedar, who brings selections from Conan Doyle’s classic Holmes stories to life.
