There are more than 400 years of history within the walls of Shepton Mallet Prison, often referred to as Cornhill or The Mallet. The prison housed its first inmates in 1625.
In its early years, the House of Correction was marked by harsh and primitive conditions. Prisoners were not separated according to the seriousness of their crimes, and men, women, and children were frequently held together. Poor conditions, combined with the fact that gaolers were unpaid, led to lax discipline, as well as widespread drunken and disorderly behaviour. Inadequate sanitation caused frequent outbreaks of disease, including gaol fever.
Rather than long prison sentences, punishment at the time more commonly took the form of fines, transportation, corporal punishment, or execution. By the late 1700s, more than 200 offences were punishable by death under what became known as the Bloody Code.
After centuries marked by death and suffering, the prison remains steeped in unease. The air itself feels charged, thick with unseen presence. Will you dare to reach out to the spirits of Shepton Malletβ‰οΈπŸ‘»
