About this Event

Shells for Shorelines: Marine Restoration Workshop
When: Saturday, September 12 | 10:00 - 11:30 AM
Where: Algalita,148 N Marina Drive, Long Beach, CA

Join us for a special community workshop with Kaysha, Marine Restoration Director at Orange County Coastkeeper, to learn about coastal restoration efforts happening right here in Southern California through the Shells for Shorelines program.

Shells for Shorelines is an oyster shell recycling initiative that partners with local restaurants to collect and repurpose donated oyster shells to support native oyster habitat restoration, including in Alamitos Bay. Oyster shell restoration is a long standing practice rooted in Indigenous coastal stewardship and plays an important role in supporting marine biodiversity in coastal ecosystems.

The Workshop Schedule:

  • Informational Presentation Learn about the program, the importance of native oysters in Southern California waterways, and ask questions during the Q+A
  • Shell String Demonstration Learn how recycled shells are prepared and used in restoration work
  • Recycled Shell Craft Create your own trinket dish using recycled scallop shells (all supplies included)

This workshop is a great opportunity to learn more about marine restoration, coastal stewardship, and creative reuse!
