Take four business executives from the Salford Mineral Water Company, strand them on an island in the middle of Derwent Water for 48 hours and watch the sparks fly. This very funny play written by Colin Firth (Calendar Girls) will be performed by the award winning Kingsbridge Amateur Theatre Company, or KATS for ease, 25th – 28th September at Malborough Village Hall
The parallels with Lord of the Flies are hardly subtle, but the focusing on middle age rather than adolescence allows writer Tim Firth to examine a rather different set of themes. Office power dynamics, caring for elderly relatives and mental health are explored in some depth. Much like being in an office the human nature on display during Sheila’s Island is both funny and despairing. Anyone who has worked in an office or been on a team building away day will find much to empathise with here.
KATS are delighted to welcome back Mike Davies who as director heads up the production team. Mike has a long track record with KATS both on stage and off stage and in the past, he directed for KATS the very successful productions of Steel Magnolias and Entertaining Angels. For Sheila’s Island, Mike has been able to cast, and work with, the very experienced acting team comprising Sheila (Sara Montague) Denise (Jules McColl) Julie (Jackie Hodges] and Fay (Jo Kelly)
Sarah Davies has joined KATS for first production, and Sarah ably assisted by Karina Tyszkiewicz will be Stage Managing the production. The irrepressible Jill Brock and her team have designed and constructed the set which represents a lonely island in the Lake District and Ben Sinnott and Luke Adams will as usual be providing their technical expertise with sound and lighting effects
