Part A - When care leads, learning follows
What makes a classroom feel stimulating and inclusive? Join Tamikah Andrew-Thomas, Judith Bryan and Martin Jorgensen as they explore practical ways to create the learning environment grounded in respect, curiosity, and care.

The session opens with the Head of Humanities Martin Jorgensen, who will share insights from his doctoral research into the everyday experiences of local communities during early UN peacekeeping operations in the Gaza Strip, Congo, and West Papua. His work shows that when we centre human experience and think intersectionally, we can create space for the many realities students bring to the classroom to thrive together.

Come ready to be curious, hear different perspectives, and reflect on your own classroom approaches!

Session choices (B&C):

EDI Essentials for tutors
This introductory training will help you explore the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching, and clarify your legal duties as a college tutor. You’ll discuss practical ways to promote inclusion in the classroom and learn from your colleagues in other curriculum areas. Please note that this workshop is required training for all tutors. PLEASE CHECK IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY ATTENDED THIS SESSION BEFORE BOOKING.

Reflexology for mental health
Reflexology uses gentle pressure on your face and hands to ease stress and help you feel better. Research suggests there are psychological benefits to the therapy and that it can boost feelings of well-being. So come along and discover some reflex points on your face and hands to help you feel less stressed, more relaxed, and energised!

Grounding for teachers - Reiki & guided meditation
Grounding can help teachers stay calm, clear‑headed and in control during fast‑paced or challenging moments. This session offers guided meditation and Reiki to help you reset, plus a downloadable resource with practical tips for staying grounded as you move through your day.

The politeness puzzle: intercultural communication in the classroom
"Just write it down now please!” Is this rude or polite? Our answer largely depends on culture or language. This workshop invites tutors into a practical exploration of how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate. We’ll aim to bring communication to life through real‑world examples, lively discussions, and interactive activities that reveal why misunderstandings happen—and how easily they can be avoided. We'll look at how cultural differences in terms of directness, tone, hierarchy, and non‑verbal cues shape classroom interactions, then experiment with strategies that make communication clearer, more inclusive, and more effective.

Wrap your head around it

In this taster workshop, you will learn a little about some of the history behind wax cotton in Africa, learn some headwrap styles before having a go at wrapping some styles yourselves!

How to enable critical thinking in the classroom
With AI and the consequential threat of misinformation, helping students question assumptions, evaluate evidence, and think creatively is more important than ever. How can we best enable these skills in our classrooms, across a range of subject areas? This workshop will be a place to share strategies, and to discuss the impact of critical thinking on students’ work, interaction, and learning.

Sing your heart out!
Singing releases endorphins and oxytocin giving us a positive feeling and an energy boost. Singing with other people creates a sense of community and social inclusion.

It's a stress reliever and it's guaranteed to be good fun!

Creating safe paths to share: Supporting students who don’t disclose or ask for support
The session aims to help you build confidence and explore strategies to enable your students to share their support needs and access support

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Explore the reasons students may not want to share information about support needs
  • Gain an overview of routes to student support
  • Identify your own strategies to engage with students who may be struggling
  • Get tips to enable you to support students who don't choose to disclose
