About this Event

On March 23 at 4:00 p.m., the School of Law will have a showing of the documentary film "Shared Legacies" by Dr. Shari Rogers, Founder of the Spill the Honey, with a discussion to follow with Dr. Rogers and Benjamin Chavis, Chair of the organization. As the website indicates, "Spill the Honey™ recognizes and honors both the Jewish American community’s legacy of self-renewal in the wake of the Holocaust and the African American community’s legacy of freedom struggles during and after slavery as it seeks to bring awareness of the historic connections between these two communities."

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Shari Rogers is a clinical psychologist, award-winning filmmaker, and founder of Spill The Honey. A proud Detroit native, she earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Detroit, where her lifelong commitment to justice and bridge-building took root.

Dr. Rogers co–executive produced Eli: Inspiring Future Generations, a PBS documentary featuring a Holocaust survivor whose story of hope has inspired many national organizations to confront racism, antisemitism, and genocide. Her most recent film—and directorial debut—is the award-winning documentary Shared Legacies: The African American Jewish Civil Rights Movement.

In addition to her work in film and advocacy, Dr. Rogers leads the Spill the Honey Educational Initiative, designed to deepen understanding of the historic alliance between African Americans and Jews and empower the next generation to build bridges of unity.

Dr. Benjamin Franklin Chavis Jr. is an African American civil rights leader, United Church of Christ ordained minister, author, journalist, organic chemist, and global entrepreneur. He is a professor at Duke University in Durhan, NC as the 2025 Senior Fellow for Divinity and Interdiscipline Studies, Chairman of Spill the Honey, and National Co-Chair of the Black Jewish Action Alliance (BJAA).

In the early 1960s, Chavis was the North Carolina statewide youth coordinator for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. Chavis is the former Executive Director and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and a graduate of University of North Carolina, Duke University, and Howard University.
