About Shan New Year:
The Shan New Year is celebrated on the first day of the New Moon in 1st month of their Lunar Calendar. It is a significant celebration not just to mark the passing of time but to help a people largely living in the diaspora, in exile and under a brutal military regime, to celebrate and preserve their culture. The Shan are the largest ethnic minority group in Myanmar/Burma and have a strong, distinct cultural identity. Therefore, this celebration is a way to reaffirm who they are, to teach the younger generations their traditions and to provide hope for a time when they may be free and autonomous and those living away, may be able to return home.
Shan New Year is celebrated with traditional foods, attire, dance, and music. Communities in exile all over Thailand and those in Burma gather to celebrate and make offerings to temples to increase their merit for the year ahead. They eat traditional foods, dance troupes practice all year to perform, and everyone is shiny and bright in traditional costume. Since the most recent military coup in Burma, 1 Feb 2021, the celebrations have dampened in Shan State, many areas are under attack and people are fleeing or fighting for their lives. So for those living in Thailand, it is an important time to reconnect with their heritage and imagine a new future, lending hope and strength for those at home.
At Free Bird Cafe Pai, since our focus has always been preservation and sharing of authentic Shan culture through food and our events, we are excited to share this important festival with you, also on the occasion of our 2 year anniversary of Free Bird Cafe Pai. We are bringing performers from Chef Jing’s village at the border to perform traditional Shan song and dance, and serving a buffet of delicious, plant based, vegan Shan cuisine. The evening will be colorful, festive, candlelit and yummy!
Please message our social media @freebirdcafepai with your name and how many in your group so that we can prepare for you.
Thank you, we are so excited to share this celebration with the Pai community.
