Shade Canopy: A Creekside Climate Walk

Join Isa Dorvillier (@isadorvillier) and Newtown Creek Alliance on Sunday, September 27 for the culminating walk of our work with Melting Metropolis and the storytelling and textile project exploring the legacy of extreme heat across the neighborhoods surrounding Newtown Creek.
Over the past year, Isa has served as storyteller-in-residence with @newtowncreek and @meltingmetropolis, researching how heat has shaped communities around Newtown Creek and working with neighbors to create a collaborative textile canopy inspired by archival images from @qplnyc.
Beginning at Cooper Park, we'll walk together through the industrial blocks around the creek to the Plank Road Public Shoreline, carrying the canopy along the way. Participants can take a turn holding one of its poles, or simply walk alongside and beneath it.
At the shoreline, we'll pause for light refreshments and an open conversation about the walk, the histories held in the canopy's prints, and the deeper legacies of extreme heat and fossil fuels in this part of the city.
