About this Event
Join us for the cherished Iranian tradition, Shab-e- Yalda to celebrate the return of light (winter solstice)!
The festivities include Iranian dinner, music, pomegranates, nuts, and poetry readings from Hafez and Rumi.
Shab-e Yalda, or Yalda Night, is an ancient Persian celebration marking the longest night of the year, which occurs on the winter solstice. This festival, celebrated on December 22st, symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness as days begin to lengthen afterward. Families gather to share stories, poetry, and traditional foods like pomegranates and nuts, reflecting themes of warmth and togetherness. Rooted in Zoroastrianism, Yalda also honors the sun god, Mithra. The night is filled with the recitation of poetry, particularly the works of Hafez, and serves as a reminder of the importance of family and the changing seasons.
