Discover the bold, graphic beauty of Sgraffito, a timeless ceramic carving technique that transforms the surface of clay into striking, layered designs. This hands-on workshop is ideal for students who want to expand their surface decoration skills and gain confidence working with underglaze and carving tools.
Students will receive two pre-made practice pieces—one wheel-thrown and one slab-built—each coated in either black or white underglaze depending on the clay body. These pieces allow students to explore carving styles, textures, and tools before moving on to their personal work.
Students will also bring one leather-hard to soft leather-hard piece of their own, prepared before class, which they will design and carve during the workshop. (Please ensure your piece is not fully dry so it’s suitable for carving.)
