Redware pottery is considered the first pottery made in the American colonies and local production of Redware in the Americas likely began in the 17th century.
Redware was made from red clay that was common in most areas.
The Pennsylvania Dutch used a variety of decorating techniques, including:
Goose quills: Colorful slip was dipped into goose quills to form designs, names, dates, and sayings.
Sgraffito: A sharp-edged wooden tool was used to scratch a design into semi-wet clay.
