Sgioba Ealain Presents: Sketchbook Waffles
About this Event
Sgioba Ealain presents: Sketchbook Waffles
Over the last year, our wee art club has grown massively, and embarked on some really big projects, like creating our own folklore characters and turing them into screenprints, as part of the Gaelic Futurisms exhibition at Strange Field . We've also been up to our usual nonsense, like making puppets from scratch, creating our own (pretend) stained glass windows, making our own paper from mulched up scraps, etc.
Join us at New Glasgow Society on the 24th of August for our group show and fundraiser, curated by the kids themselves. We'll have refreshments from 6pm, and a raffle at 8pm, featuring some creative donations from our wider Gaelic art community - not to be missed!
About Our Art Club
Sgioba Ealain is a monthly Gaelic-language art club established in 2024 by artist Choirstaidh NicArtair (choirstaidhiona.jpeg).
It is an inclusive space for Gaelic-speaking kids to learn about the world of art, historical and contemporary, through play, crafting, and the Gaelic language.
When you grow up in GME, it's easy for Gaelic to become this language that you speak in school and nowhere else, especially in a city or a town away from the Gaelic heartlands. It's easy to forget that you belong to a community if there isn't a physical representation of it at your bit.
Sgioba Ealain is, hopefully, a bit of an antidote to this. We provide kids with a silly, expressive, engaging space to use their Gaelic, and get stuck in to some arts and crafts activities as they go. Our club is all about trying new things, meeting new pals, and supporting each other to do our best.
