About this Event

What's the vibe?

This class is for beginners who don't know anything about machine sewing, and for people who have some experience, but don't know how to alter clothes.

My sewing classes are centred around 2SLGBTQIA+ and Disabled people. Allies are welcome! We appreciate you being in our lives!

Do I need a sewing kit?

No, you will be provided a sewing kit with the following tools (notions):

  • Fabric squares
  • Thread snips
  • Sewing pins
  • Pin cushion
  • Seam ripper
  • Tailors chalk
  • Tailors measuring tape
  • Pencil

The following items will be at each sewing station for you to borrow:

  • Cutting mat and rotary cutter
  • Magnetic pin cushion
  • Clip on light
  • Extension cord

I will provide the following items if needed:

  • Iron & arm length ironing board
  • Thread
  • Extra machine needles

Lesson Summary:

Machine overview and how to hem non-stretch fabrics.

How to thread your machine, set tensions, pick the correct weight of thread, needle, fabric and notions for your project.

Learn how to sew hems for jeans, chinos, and other non-stretch garments. This can be very simple, and saves you time and money.

Communication:

Once you have registered here, you can expect a follow up e-mail from [email protected] with the seam ripping homework, links to important instructional examples, and upcoming drop-ins.

I am always happy to answer questions on my @plussizefitsgibsons Instagram account or by email [email protected].

To do:

Review the seam ripping instructions I e-mail, and prepare your pants or skirt for class.

Use the notions chart to buy the materials you need. Feel free to print out any of the files I send if that helps you.

You will need:

A pair of bottoms or a shirt that you want taken up (hemmed). If you have less stretchy or not stretchy garments bring those.

If you only have stretchy garments to work with you will need a Universal Stretch or Ballpoint sewing machine needle, and a steady (foot) pedal speed.

Thread of matching or similar colour to the garment.

A sewing machine. If you don't have one you can borrow one, or sign one out at the library.

Accessibility details:

This is a neurodiverse centric space. If you are neurodiverse you are welcome here.

There is one wheelchair accessible toilet. Bathrooms are all genders.

There is no body shaming. All bodies and gender expressions are welcome.

The entire place is one level and is solid concrete flooring. There are glass double front doors, they are the only accessible entry and exit.

Windows run along one side of the entire space.

The lighting is overhead string bulbs, and I provide clip on lapel bike lights to borrow so you can see your work better if you would like.

There is no music played during the drop-in, and the only noises are those we make with the sewing machines and the chatting we do. We welcome vocal stims in this space.

Please refrain from wearing perfumes and colognes. No strongly floral scented lotions please. Natural oils, basic antiperspirants and deodorants are safe.

You are encouraged to bring stim toys, comfort items, snacks, and other things you may need to be comfortable. Trying to be more accessible is part of what we're doing here.
