SEWING 101 — 4 Classes, 2 Weeks — Best for Beginner Sewists
Complete a custom tote bag. Bring your own machine or borrow one of ours!

Course Dates: TUESDAY 3/10, WEDNESDAY 3/11, TUESDAY 3/17, WEDNESDAY 3/18 from 6PM-8:30PM.


Who you are: Someone who wants to learn how to sew on a machine! You have no previous sewing skills or basic sewing skills and are looking for directions on where to start, how to use a sewing machine, sew straight lines, use overlocking stitching, choose fabrics, cut patterns, and complete a project!


Class Structure: Hands-on machine sewing class lead by sewist, Julia Medeiros. During this intimate 4-class course, each class is 2.5 hours long, and the class size is 4 students.

Class Curriculum: Sewing machine set-up and operation, basic sewing principals, fundamentals of fabric selection and preparation, essential tools, using interfacing, creating a basic patch pocket, creating box corners, working with lining, considering design decisions, and other best practices for a professional finish.

Outcomes: Participants will create a customized lined tote bag and gain the foundational sewing skills needed to explore new projects with confidence.


What you need: Bring yourself! If you have a sewing machine please bring it along with its pedal attachment and needle in serviced working order. If you do not have a sewing machine, no worries we have machines available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own machine to class to learn its settings and functionality, but if you don't have a machine and aren't ready to invest in one, we'd be happy to make one available to you during class.

You will be responsible for sourcing fabric and matching thread BUT DO NOT buy anything yet - Our course teacher will cover how to select fabric in the first class. Ticket price includes access to all other necessary tools to complete the project.


Beginners Sewing Kit is included in the ticket price: Our Head Tailor has put together the best beginners sewing kits in all of New England. You will receive the following, which is the highest quality tools to support you on your sewing journey: Pincushion, Hand Sewing Needles, Size Inclusive 80" Tape Measure, Seam Gauge, Seam Ripper, Pins, Tailor Fabric Scissors ,Thread Snips, Two Colors of Tailor's Chalk, Heat Eraseble Pen.


* No refund is given for any missed classes in the course. It is your responsibility to come to each class. If a class needs to be missed you can communicate with your teacher to help catch you up on the project from home before our next class.


Class 1 — Get Grounded
Learn how to operate your machine, what tools are key to sewing success, and how to choose fabric.

Class 2 — Get Started
Learn how to translate your 3-D vision into 2-D pattern pieces and master best practices for measuring and cutting.

Class 3 — Get it Together
Learn how to make and attach finished-edge patch pockets and steps to assemble your bag.

Class 4 — Get it Done
Finish assembling your bag, attach handles, and add final touches.

Meet your Instructor : Julia Medeiros

Julia is a technical apparel designer, and has been a professional sewist for 25 years. She has run her own sewing studios in Ukraine, Portugal, California, and now here in Rhode Island. Julia specializes in almost everything: from custom clothing, to alterations and repairs, to working with drapery and leather. She is passionate about teaching at all levels, from beginner skills to advanced techniques.
