The Serial Readers Book Club is for stories that take more than one book to tell. Together, we'll make our way through a series from beginning to end, one volume at a time. You don't have to start with us or make it to every meeting—jump in whenever you'd like! This book club is led by the lovely Sammi Snow.
We're continuing Beth Brower's beloved The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, the charming, funny, and thoroughly addictive series told through the journals of an irrepressible young woman making a life for herself in Victorian London. This month, we're reading Volume 5, as the world we've come to know in St. Crispian's grows richer, stranger, and increasingly interconnected.

Five volumes in, Emma and her wonderfully eccentric circle no longer feel quite like new acquaintances. We've watched friendships form, suspicions develop, mysteries accumulate, and relationships shift in ways both subtle and significant. But if there's one thing we've learned from Emma's journals, it's that there's always more going on than first appears.

In Volume 5, the pleasures of reading a series really begin to pay off. Details and characters we've been carrying with us across earlier volumes continue to gather meaning, long-running questions remain tantalizingly unresolved, and Emma finds herself navigating an increasingly complicated web of friendships, family, secrets, and surprises. Through it all, her sharp eye and unmistakable sense of humor make even the smallest encounters worth recording.

We'll talk about the characters we've grown most attached to, the relationships we're rooting for, the mysteries we're still trying to solve, and all those seemingly insignificant details we're now convinced Beth Brower included for a reason. We'll also consider how our relationship with Emma has changed after five volumes—and why spending this much time with a character can make reading a series feel so different from reading a single novel.
