https://bookings.pariscat.com.au/checkout/2242/The Yael Zamir Quintet presents an evening celebrating Roland Kirk’s extraordinary contributions to jazz and multi-instrumentalism. A deeply spiritual artist, Kirk often drew inspiration from his dreams—including one in which he played multiple saxophones at once. Driven by this vision, he customized his instruments and taught himself the technique at just 16. He went on to become renowned for his ability to play several horns simultaneously, as well as for his vivid and expressive approach to the flute. Kirk remains one of the most fiercely original and eccentric voices in jazz history.
Yael Zamir is an award-winning jazz flute player who regularly performs and records in the Melbourne jazz scene alongside esteemed musicians such as Paul Grabowsky and Tony Gould. Following her study of the classical flute tradition, Yael completed her Bachelor degree at Monash University, studying jazz flute. She has since established herself as a professional jazz performer, with a focus on Brazilian jazz. Yael is known for her musical innovation and creativity, and is looking forward to bringing these elements of Roland Kirk’s music to life.
Expect a swinging band paying tribute to Kirk’s vibrant flute and saxophone playing, as well as his original compositions.
