I’m delighted to invite you to a Music House concert on Tuesday, June 16, at 7pm, featuring works by three greats: Mozart, Janáček, and Schumann. Our very own Keiko Sekino (ECU’s Associate Professor of Piano and Chair of Keyboard Studies) will be joined by acclaimed violinist Stephanie Zyzak to bring us an evening of exquisite music.
The evening will begin 30 minutes before the concert starts with drinks on the porch, then we will move inside for the musical program. During intermission, we take a break for refreshments, wine tasting, and socializing.
You are likely familiar with one or more of the pieces on the program, as they are all quite popular and well-loved. We’ll begin with Mozart’s Violin Sonata No. 33 in Eb Major, which is a bit of a mystery– we don’t know much about its history, but we do know it helped shape the entire genre and stands as a giant among its peers. Next will be Janáček’s only surviving violin sonata. He wrote it at the beginning of the First World War, and reflected, “...in the 1914 Sonata for violin and piano I could just about hear sound of the steel clashing in my troubled head; It’s an impressive backdrop for an impressive work. Truly a moment in history, for the world and for classical music. This isn’t a piece to miss. Keiko and Stephanie will finish the program off with Schumann’s dramatic Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor, Op. 121. Aside from the immersive musical experience it always provides, this piece also has an intriguing history, which you can read more about here. If you’ve never heard it, you will be in for a huge treat. Well, you will be in for a treat either way, of course.
This is a wonderful concert to invite friends, family, and colleagues who may be new to classical music, as these pieces are very accessible and offer a truly delightful listening experience. And, as always, there’s no pressure to know classical concert etiquette. I welcome new faces and will look forward to serving them some delicious refreshments as well. With that in mind, I invite you to forward this email to 2-3 friends or colleagues, or share the concert’s Facebook event or Instagram post. Word of mouth makes a tremendous difference!
