was born in Gainesville, GA and he began playing guitar at the age of 12 when his father gave him his first guitar. While attending Elementary School, Douglas taught himself guitar fundamentals, and this dedication kept him out of the streets.
As a teenager at E.E. Butler High School Douglas formed local bands with friends from the community including, The Funky Society Band. While attending high school Doug started performing in multiple local R&B bands and groups. He eventually recorded multiple albums with gospel groups including the Norman Brothers and the Brawner Brothers singing groups. In 1972 Doug graduated from Gainesville High School and joined professional bands Onyx, Jeff-Gaines, Glow and Loose Chain. Over the years Douglas honed his chops enough to play with great such as Z.Z. Hill Clarence Carter, and The Drifters.
By 1989 Douglas married Vanessa Westbrooks and they shared their love of music with their children, son Steven Ellison, Music Educator/Instructor/Master Jazz Percussionist and daughter, Jazmine Ellison, a talented vocalist. Douglas supported his family as a night machine operator for over 25 years, but made time to perform and compose as a guitarist nights and weekends. He always made an effort to be back in town on Sundays at St. Paul UMC to play for his Men's Chorus alongside his son, Steven.
Some of his best memories were being the music director for the World-famous Tams for 5 years. He was also guitarist for Jazz Pianist Madoka, Jazz Vocalist Toni Byrd, International Vocalist Ingrid Arthur and numerous other artists throughout his expansive career of more than 50 years as a musician.
Presently, guitarist Douglas Ellison, continues to perform masterfully with his own band Douglas Ellison & Primetime as well as his corporate band 1st Generation, throughout the southeast. Douglas Ellison's 2020 album release entitled, "Thick My Name", is a variety of original Soulful Funk, Smooth Jazz and Cool Grooves! Albums available through iTunes, Amazon and all other digital platforms. His Singles "Smooth MT Rain" "Haap", and "Cold" are popular favorites on satellite radio stations worldwide!
Douglas Ellison is proud to know his music continues to play a huge role in the lives of his children and even his grandchildren Kingston and Maverick.
