Thomas of Celano tells us that “In art, he [St. Francis] praises the Artist and whatever he discovers in creatures he guides to the Creator.”
Saint Francis saw the beauty around him, whether it be music, art or nature, as a pathway to God. St. Bonaventure says that “in beautiful things, St. Francis saw Beauty itself”. Beauty in the medieval world was another name for God as beauty represented harmony, balance and right relationships.
We can follow St. Francis’ path and find our way to the Divine in beautiful things. This one-day workshop will guide participants through four spiritual practices of attending, inhabiting, valuing and gazing—each providing a different perspective on beauty. Participants will engage with the Casa’s works of art, the desert pathways and healing garden, contemplative practices, small and large group discussions, and more. You are invited to step away from the busyness and blur of our daily living and enter into a mindful and intentional focus on beauty in the Franciscan tradition.
FEE: $75 per person including lunch. Pre-registration required.
