‘Second from Last in the Sack Race’ is a warm, witty and poignant coming-of-age story following Henry Pratt from wartime childhood to young adulthood. Born into poverty and saddled with a “born loser and parrot-strangler” for a dad, short-sighted and ungainly Henry doesn’t exactly have a head start in life. Yet in David Nobbs’s brilliantly funny evocation of a Yorkshire boyhood, this over-imaginative underdog proves he can stick up for himself with resilience, humour and heart.
