On June 30th, we’ll explore a corner of Seattle that combines lakeshore beauty, hidden stairways, and classic mid-century neighborhood charm — the Lakewood Stairs. We’ll begin at the Lakewood Community Center before setting off northeast through Genesee Park. This is the site of Seattle’s historic Seafair hydroplane races, the park still hums with community energy, its wide lawns and lakeside views a reminder of summer celebrations that have long been part of the city’s rhythm.
From the lake’s edge, we’ll take a turn uphill, climbing into the Lakewood neighborhood perched above Lake Washington. Here, stairways cut between homes and alleyways, revealing just how steep this part of the city can be. These staircases, tucked into unexpected places, are a workout as well as a window into Seattle’s character: a city that meets its hills with creativity and grit. Each climb rewards us with views over the lake and the distant Cascades beyond.
Our route weaves through quiet residential blocks lined with mid-century ramblers, small parks, and gardens bursting with early summer color. This is a neighborhood that shows pride in its soil: rhododendrons, roses, and carefully tended flowerbeds brighten the walk at every turn. The mix of established greenery and homeowner handiwork makes this trek a living gallery of what thrives in Seattle’s climate, from towering evergreens to bright splashes of blooms.
Before closing our loop, we’ll stop at Empire Roasters and Records, a funky neighborhood café that doubles as a vinyl shop. With coffee in hand and music spinning from the past, we’ll finish our morning with conversation and a dose of eclectic Seattle culture. This Lakewood trek offers it all: parks, shoreline, stairs, gardens, and a touch of neighborhood quirk — a perfect reminder of the many ways the city surprises us when we explore it on foot.
