On June 23rd, we’ll venture into Seattle’s grandest park — Discovery Park. Spanning more than 500 acres, it is the largest green space in the city, a landscape where forest, meadow, and shoreline meet. What is now a treasured public park was once a U.S. Army base known as Fort Lawton, later used as a naval station with radar installations to scan the skies over the Puget Sound. Today, the remnants of its military past remain only in scattered buildings and memories, while the land has been reclaimed for nature and community.
Our walk begins at the Environmental Learning Center on the park’s east side. From there, we’ll take the southern route down through the forested slopes to the beach and lighthouse. Here, the shores of Elliott Bay stretch out before us, a place alive with wildlife. Keep watch for harbor seals bobbing in the water, seabirds wheeling overhead, and the occasional salmon leaping just offshore. The West Point Lighthouse, standing sentinel since 1881, is one of the park’s most iconic landmarks and a perfect reminder of the blend of history and wild beauty that defines Discovery.
From the shoreline, our trek carries us north, following trails that wind along driftwood-strewn beaches before turning upward. Several flights of stairs bring us into the wide, grassy meadows above. If you look closely here, you’ll notice scattered heirloom apple trees. Legend has it that these are remnants from orchards planted by European settlers in the 1800s, who homesteaded on this very land. Today, they stand quietly among the meadows, a living link to another chapter of Seattle’s past.
We’ll complete our journey by weaving back through forested trails, closing the loop at the Environmental Learning Center. Afterwards, we’ll drive down to Caffè Appassionato, where strong coffee and sweet treats will round out the morning. Discovery Park is more than just Seattle’s largest park — it’s a tapestry of history, ecology, and community. On this trek, we’ll experience it all: forest paths, windswept bluffs, hidden orchards, and a shoreline where the city and the wild meet in harmony.
See you at the Discovery Park Learning Center at 9:30 am
