Please join the Seattle Fire Department on Friday, Oct. 4 in honoring all Seattle firefighters who have died in the line of duty. The annual Seattle Fallen Firefighter Memorial will take place from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4 in Occidental Park (between Main and Washington streets). We welcome members of the public to participate in person or online through our Facebook livestream: www.facebook.com/seattlefire.
The ceremony will begin with the presentation of colors by the Walter Kilgore Memorial Honor Guard, followed by a performance by the Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums band. Speakers will include city elected officials, union leaders Lt. Kenny Stuart and Battalion Chief Dan Murray, and Seattle Fire Chief Harold D. Scoggins.
Since 1891, there have been 55 Seattle firefighters who have lost their lives as the result of injury or illness tied to their work. The memorial serves as a reminder of the dangerous nature of firefighting and to pause in gratitude for the ultimate sacrifice these heroes have made to serve the City of Seattle.
Friday evening, Seattle Fire apparatus will park at the front of their station with red lights flashing between 8 and 8:15 p.m. You are invited to help “Light the Night” by visiting your neighborhood station to observe or by changing out an exterior light on your home with a red bulb for the evening.
Please note: Stations who are on an emergency response may not be in quarters to participate.
