“Photographers don’t just take pictures; they notice things other people walk right past.”
— Patsee Ober, Underwater Photographer
A fun, hands-on, and educational way of learning to truly see, this unique class invites students into the magical world of underwater photography. Guided by Patsee, participants will practice careful observation and visual discovery, learning to notice the small details that often go unseen, from intricate patterns and reflections to the shapes and textures found in rocks, shells, and other ocean-inspired materials.
Students will be introduced to foundational photography concepts such as angle, distance, composition, pattern, and detail, while exploring simple macro photography techniques using waterproof cameras.
In addition to building creative skills, this class also fosters environmental awareness. Students will learn about tidepool habitats and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), gaining a deeper understanding of the delicate ecosystems that inspire their work and the importance of protecting our oceans.
Each student will have access to their own underwater camera and individual water tank filled with curated underwater treasures, allowing plenty of time to experiment and capture multiple photographs. At the end of the class, each participant will select their favorite photograph to be printed and presented in a framed 8x10 mat. Please wear short-sleeves!
