Screens in Dialogue - How to design and stage multi-channel film installations
Julian Rosefeldt, a German film and video artist, works at the intersection of fiction and documentary, stage and backdrop, combining moving image, architecture, theatre and literature in his multimedia installations. He is particularly interested in the relationship between stage and background, the visible and the hidden, the original and the non-original. His films not only evoke social narratives but also reflect on the moving image itself – as an archive, a myth-making machine and an experimental space.
The artist, whose best-known work is Manifesto featuring Cate Blanchett, often works with monumental sets or post-industrial locations, while continuously questioning the mechanisms and interrelations of visual representation, narrative creation and ideology.
His upcoming lecture offers insight into his artistic practice and the methods behind the design of multi-channel video installations. During the evening, Rosefeldt will present his creative thinking and his reinterpretation of the boundaries between film and installation. After the event, attendees will have the opportunity to talk to the artist in a special Q&A session!
Born in 1965, Rosefeldt studied architecture in Munich and Barcelona, but his interests soon turned towards contemporary art, visual narratives and the intersections of moving image. His works often reflect on social, historical and ideological questions, usually taking the form of visually striking, meticulously designed installations and multi-channel projections that mirror the complex interconnections of different dimensions of reality.
His works can be found in numerous international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Sammlung Goetz in Munich, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich, Sprengel Museum in Hanover, and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens.
His thirteen-channel film installation Manifesto, in which Australian actress Cate Blanchett appears in thirteen roles, serves both as a tribute and a critique – a reinterpretation of the history of artistic manifestos. The work has been exhibited in twenty-five institutions worldwide, including the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest. The C/O Berlin recently dedicated a major retrospective to Rosefeldt, presenting his 30-year career under the title Nothing is Original.
Rosefeldt has lived in Berlin since the late 1990s. Between 2009 and 2010, he was a visiting professor of digital media at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, and since 2010 he has been a member of the Film and Media Art Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bavaria. Since 2011, he has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich as a professor of media art.

A fikció és a dokumentum, a színpad és a kulisszák határterületein dolgozik Julian Rosefeldt német film- és videóművész, aki összművészeti installációiban egyesíti a mozgóképet, az építészetet, a színházat és az irodalmat. Különösen érdekli a színpad és a háttér, a látható és a rejtett, az eredeti és a nem eredeti viszonya, filmjei nemcsak társadalmi narratívákat idéznek meg, hanem magára a mozgóképre is reflektálnak: mint archívumra, mítoszgyárra és kísérleti térre.
A művész, akinek talán legismertebb alkotása a Cate Blanchettel készült Manifesto, gyakran monumentális díszletekkel vagy éppen posztindusztriális helyszínekkel dolgozik, miközben folyamatosan rákérdez a képi reprezentáció, a narratíva alkotás és az ideológiák működésére, összefüggéseire.
Mostani elődása betekintést nyújt saját művészi gyakorlatába és a több-csatornás videóinstallációk tervezésének módszereibe. Az este során Rosefeldt bemutatja alkotói gondolkodását, a film és installáció műfaji határainak újraértelmezését. Az előadást követően arra is lehetőség nyílik, hogy feltegyük kérdéseinket.
Az 1965-ben született Rosefeldt Münchenben és Barcelonában tanult építészetet, de érdeklődése hamar a kortárs képzőművészet, a vizuális narratívák, és a mozgókép határterületei felé fordult. Munkái gyakran reflektálnak társadalmi, történelmi és ideológiai kérdésekre, általában vizuálisan lenyűgöző, gondosan megtervezett installációk, többcsatornás vetítések, amelyek a valóság különböző dimenzióinak komplex összefonódásait tükrözik.
Művei számos nemzetközi gyűjteményben megtalálhatók, többek között a New York-i MoMA-ban, a berlini Neue Nationalgalerie-ban, a melbourne-i National Gallery of Victoria-ban, a müncheni Sammlung Goetz-ben, a bonni Kunstmuseum-ban, a sydney-i Art Gallery of New South Wales-ben, a stuttgarti Staatsgalerie-ban, a müncheni Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen-ban, a hannoveri Sprengel Museum-ban és az athéni Nemzeti Kortárs Művészeti Múzeumban.
Tizenhárom csatornás filminstallációja, a Manifesto, amelyben az ausztrál színésznő, Cate Blanchett tizenhárom szerepben látható, egyszerre tiszteletadás és kritika, a művészeti manifesztumok történetének újraértelmezése - a munkát világszerte huszonöt intézményben vetítették, többek közt Budapesten, a Magyar Nemzeti Galériában. A C/O Berlin nemrégiben nagy retrospektív kiállítást szentelt Rosefeldtnek, amelyen 30 éves munkásságát mutatták be Nothing is Original címmel.
Rosefeldt az 1990-es évek vége óta él Berlinben él, 2009-2010-ben a weimari Bauhaus Egyetem digitális média vendégprofesszora volt, 2010 óta a Bajor Képzőművészeti Akadémia film- és médiaművészeti tanszékének tagja. 2011 óta a müncheni Képzőművészeti Akadémián tanít a médiaművészet professzoraként.
