Screening: "The Last of the Mohicans" by Michael Mann

Amid the battles between British and French forces, and their Indigenous allies, for control of territories in North America, a family of Mohican trappers and their adopted settler son, Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), are enlisted to protect the daughters of a British colonel. The Last of the Mohicans is screening as part of the film series Once Upon a Time in Manhood, curated by comedian and activist Dallas Goldtooth (Mdewakanton Dakota/Diné). For Goldtooth, director Michael Mann’s interpretation of the 1826 novel by James Fenimore Cooper reinforced how Indigenous narratives continue to be erased. He instead held onto the excellent performances by Wes Studi (Cherokee) and Eric Schweig (Inuvialuk), which carried a different kind of presence and weight. 1992, US, DCP, 112 min.
