About this Event
Imagine if Snow White spent ten minutes describing the apple or only two sentences describing all seven dwarfs. Description in fiction is vital, but how much is too much? Effective details can make readers feel like they're witnessing the characters interact in the story. But excessive description can bog the story down. This workshop will focus on writing compelling descriptions and learning how to use them to your advantage.
In this workshop, you will:
- Learn to describe settings effectively.
- Use generative writing prompts to build vivid visuals of characters, settings, and plot-driving objects.
- Discover how to use specific details to give your writing a cinematic feel.
- Learn how the right balance of adjectives, verbs, and adverbs can enhance description.
- Create new writing from original prompts to describe settings that enhance your story's mood.
- Connect with other writers.
- Receive immediate positive and constructive feedback.
Our workshops are part lecture and part generative writing. We choose prompts based on themes of the week, education, craft, or creative value, so you can be sure you'll always have fresh ideas. We prioritize positive reinforcement and teaching techniques, so you'll leave each meeting feeling inspired and ready to tackle your next writing project.
