This workshop will begin with an exploration into understanding addiction and substance use disorders from the neurobiological, historical, and data-driven perspectives. We will discuss the impact of bias and discrimination as an obstruction to supporting people with substance use disorders (SUD).
The training will then prepare each individual to successfully administer an evidence-based substance use screening tool and review the principles and components of a Brief Intervention (BI) to effectively implement Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). Attendees will learn specific skills and tools to effectively deliver BI’s. Building on the spirit of motivational interviewing and the power of therapeutic relationships, participants can create a safe environment for people to discuss substance use. Implementing SBIRT to address substance use, misuse, and addiction has strength because it is a public health approach and can be adapted in a wide range of settings. SBIRT helps improve the health of the community by filling the gap between primary prevention and more intensive treatment. It is a proactive approach that provides the tools for identifying the people who require early interventions. For people at risk with existing SUDs, it addresses problems before more sever consequences occur. Simultaneously it includes the opportunity for BI for people with less severs SUDs to get the support they need.
