Sew Slow Course starting March 14th 2025 🪡✨Monthly Workshop/ Course Description
A chance to sit & take your time to create with some slow sewing. Each week is designed to teach you the art of different hand sewing techniques.
A great course to take your mind off the rushes of life, for beginners new to fabrics & stitching and those who like dabbling in the art of Slow Stitch.
Week 1 (March 14th) English Paper Piecing. We associate English patchwork with Hexagons a lot of the time, but this method actually allows you to put together many combinations of different shapes. You will make a sample with the option of making it into a pincushion or needle case, Or Both!.
Week 2 ( April) Sashiko. Very popular for decorative repairing at the moment, but 400 years ago, this stitching technique surged among working rural communities in Japan. We will explore some traditional designs & you will have the option to make it into a simple shoulder bag.
Week 3 ( May) Needle Turn Applique & Quilting. The traditional way of applique where a motif of fabric is cut out & applied onto a back ground. We will look at the beautiful American patchworks & complete a Baltimore Flower. You will have the opportunity to hand quilt & make this into a small cushion or picture.
Week 4 (June) Kantha Quilting. Kantha varies from different districts of India. But work is usually done with running stitches, though there are variations to this embroidery that uses other stitches too. We will create a lovely sampler that can be made into a beautiful tactile draw string pouch.
Week 5 ( July) Visible Mending (Contemporary mending!) We will explore the Stitch 'Boro' & types of fabrics & how they wear & tear & how to fix them beautifully! There are different ways of stabilising the broken fabrics combined with simple embroidery stitches & an array of different coloured threads, your garments, quilts or bags & cushions will live on!
Week 6 (August) Slow Stitch Taster. Slow stitch is to be interpreted as stitching without worry. Thus taking the stress out of what the finished sewing 'Should' look like. This technique would make great birthday cards, pictures or a bigger project.
Week 7 ( September) Victorian Patchwork (Crazy patchwork) The Victorians loved rich Silks & velvets & stitched together their scraps of furnishings & dresses and made them into ornate bed spreads. We will have a go at this and finish it off as a scissor holder.
Week 8 (October) A re-Cap of the course, Show & tell and finishing off session.
