When the sun sets and the gates close, Geelong Gaol reveals a different side of its history.Join the National Crime & Justice Museum after dark and explore one of Australia’s most intact 19th-century prisons by torchlight. Behind these imposing bluestone walls lie more than 170 years of stories—stories of crime, punishment, despair, resilience and death.
Opened in 1853, Geelong Gaol served many purposes throughout its long history. It housed men, women and children. It witnessed executions. It became known as the “Seaside Resort,” where the sick, elderly and infirm were often sent to spend their final days. Prisoners plotted daring escapes, warders maintained strict discipline, and countless lives were forever changed within these walls.
Over the years, Geelong Gaol has developed a reputation as one of Victoria’s most haunted buildings. Staff, volunteers and visitors have reported unexplained sounds, shadowy figures, sudden drops in temperature and strange sensations in areas where some of the gaol’s most significant events occurred.
Could it be that the emotions, experiences and energies of those who once lived, suffered and died here have left an imprint on the building itself? Some believe that places which have witnessed intense human experiences can retain echoes of the past long after the people are gone.
