How far would you go to escape?
Thousands of prisoners passed through the gates of Geelong Gaol during its 138 years of operation. Many accepted their fate. Others risked everything for a chance at freedom.
Join us for the Escape Tour and uncover the fascinating true stories of the men, women and children who attempted to break free from one of Australia’s most formidable prisons. Hear tales of daring plans, hidden tools, desperate acts and remarkable ingenuity. Some prisoners succeeded in leaving the gaol behind. Many others saw their dreams of freedom come crashing down.
Opened in 1853, Geelong Gaol remains one of Australia’s most intact 19th-century prisons. As you walk through original cell blocks and historic corridors, discover the stories of those who challenged the prison walls and the consequences they faced when their plans unravelled.
Led by one of our experienced costumed guides or historians, this unique tour brings to life a side of prison history rarely told.
Every escape attempt has a story.
