At Black Surf Santa Cruz Pop-Up Program events (PUP), you will learn how to surf in an inclusive environment, build community, and experience the many lessons that the ocean has to offer. All equipment, wetsuits, and snacks will be provided! No surfing experience is necessary, but we do ask that participants know how to swim. This event is designed for beginners, however, all levels are welcome. *Participants must be 18 years or older

About our Pop-Up Program:

Our Pop-Up Program typically lasts no longer than 3 hours in length and is subject to changes based on the weather. We provide coaching, facilitators, and equipment to Black Surf Santa Cruz members free of charge.

  1. Welcome Circle (15 mins) - participants and volunteers will have an opportunity to honor Indigenous ancestors, share goals and feelings, and build community together.
  2. Sand Learning Session (15 mins) - volunteer coaches will guide participants through an introductory ocean learning session where they will have the opportunity to learn about the real history of surfing, ocean awareness, basic ocean safety tips, and practice basic surf mechanics.
  3. Water Session (1.5 - 2 hrs) - participants and volunteers will have the opportunity to practice newfound water skills, deepen their relationship with the ocean, and support each other in reaching their goals and having fun.
  4. Community Healing/ Debrief (30 mins) - Following the water session, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a restorative discussion while enjoying post-surf snacks together. Any help cleaning up after the session is appreciated!
