• Course Description:
In this introductory course, Sashiko participants will learn about the history of Sashiko and the basic supplies needed to get started. Students will learn the two main types of Sashiko; Moyozashi which uses the running stitch in long lines for pictorial type designs, and Hitomezashi which uses a grid to align stitches to form patterns. We will also go over some of the patterns and their significance to Japanese history. Throughout the course students will also be learning about the negative impact of the fast-fashion industry on the environment and about the positive impact and importance of mending our well-worn clothes (using sashiko!) as opposed to throwing them in the trash.
