Sandra Meigs: Beasts, Clocks and Popeye

Sandra Meigs has sustained her painting practice for over 40 years. Through three interconnected bodies of work – Beasts, Clocks and Popeye – she reflects on a lifetime of devotion to painting and lingers on the questions that accompany such a sustained practice. All these works unite by a meditation on time: time measured, time passing, time suspended, and time held. Drawing on vintage clocks, toy figurines from the 1930-50’s, and her beloved muse, Popeye, Sandra creates images that exist outside of standard chronology.

These familiar forms: painted clocks with emphasized bodies and hands, creatures butted up, biting, and caressing one another, and the infamous Popeye, all invite an awareness of transience – the way images, memories, and experiences intertwine, endure and dissolve, over and over and over again.
