Before UC San Diego and the University of San Diego tip off their seasons at the National University Bill Walton Classic on November 7, join us at One of Us, San Diego’s new women’s sports bar. Get ready for a fun, down-to-earth conversation with the two powerhouse head coaches leading the programs onto the court.
Hear from Heidi VanDerveer, Head Coach of UC San Diego Women’s Basketball, and Blanche Alverson, Head Coach of University of San Diego Women’s Basketball, in a conversation moderated by Dr. Nancy Rohland-Heinrich, Executive Vice President, Community Engagement at National University.
We’ll talk about all things women’s hoops: the incredible growth of the women’s game, the rise of the WNBA, what’s happening across NCAA basketball, and the energy building around women’s basketball right here in San Diego.
We’ll also talk about where the game is headed, what these coaches are seeing from the sidelines, and what fans can expect when the Tritons and Toreros take the court at Pechanga Arena on November 7.

Meet the coaches
Heidi VanDerveer | Head Coach, UC San Diego
From the WNBA to the NCAA Tournament, Heidi VanDerveer brings a unique perspective on how women’s basketball has evolved, and what’s she's excited for next.
Before taking over at UC San Diego, VanDerveer coached in the WNBA, served as an Olympic team scout, and worked alongside legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. She has coached some of the biggest names in the women’s game, including Sue Bird, Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie, and Diana Taurasi.
Now entering her 15th season at UC San Diego, VanDerveer has led the Tritons through their transition to Division I and into back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, giving her a front-row seat to the momentum surrounding women’s basketball today.
Blanche Alverson | Head Coach, University of San Diego
Blanche Alverson enters her second season leading the Toreros after building her career at some of the highest levels of college basketball.
Before coming to USD, Alverson spent six seasons at Georgia Tech, including time as associate head coach, helping the Yellow Jackets reach three NCAA Tournaments and the program’s second-ever Sweet 16.
A former Auburn standout and two-time SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Alverson knows the college game as an athlete and coach. She is now building the next chapter of Torero Women’s Basketball, making the November 7 matchup an exciting early look at where the program is headed.
