Salt of the Earth: A Fundraiser for Food Chain Workers Alliance
About this Event
Who makes your Thanksgiving possible?
Behind every meal are people who plant, harvest, pack, transport, prepare, and serve our food. This Thanksgiving season, we’re gathering to celebrate their work and stand alongside them.
Join Milagro x El Cine on November 14 for a special matinee screening of Salt of the Earth, a fundraiser benefiting the Food Chain Workers Alliance.
Before the screening, we’ll join FCWA for a conversation about food, labor, and the people behind our holiday tables. What does gratitude mean when we think about the hands that feed us? How can we turn that gratitude into solidarity?
Then we’ll watch Salt of the Earth, bringing us together through cinema to reflect on dignity, community, and the power of collective action.
The event will also feature custom artwork created for the occasion.

Post-screening panel with Sarah Vargas from Avenue 33 Farm, a hyper local food hub built around an urban farm in the hillsides of lincoln heights. As a trusted food hub,we expand food by operating a free produce distribution, an affordable and EBT centered farmstand, provide farm to school programming, and train the next generation of farmers and José López, who was named Executive Director of the Food Chain Workers Alliance in 2025, twelve years after joining the organization as a volunteer. A native Angeleno and longtime activist, José previously served as a team lead for UFCW Local 770’s El Super boycott and has spent many years as a volunteer leader with Dream Team LA, an immigrant rights organization where he leads member recruitment and retention. José has spoken on Telemundo, Fox News, and other major networks about immigrant rights and the need for a true path to citizenship. As he often points out, people say, “Do it the right way,” but there is no real right way—and no back of the line.
Bring your friends, your family, and the people you share a table with. Let’s make this season of gratitude a reason to show up for one another.
