Julio comes out to his Cuban family over Noche Buena dominoes. Six years later, he returns to marry a man—and finds love was always home
About this Event

Salida

Every family has its rituals. For Julio's, it's dominoes on Noche Buena—the same table, the same players, the same unspoken rules.

On Christmas Eve 2015, Julio sits down to play with his father Martin, his uncle Manny, and his grandfather Oswaldo in the house where they've always gathered. Before the night is over, he'll break one of those unspoken rules: he comes out to his Cuban family, and not everyone at the table is ready to hear it.

Six years later, Julio returns to the same house—now inherited from Oswaldo, who has since passed. He comes back alone, with news: he's getting married to a man. The dominoes come out again. So does everything that was left unsaid.

Salida—which in Spanish means both "exit" and "coming out"—is a play about what we leave behind and what we can't escape. It's about the love that shows up in silence, in stubbornness, in a letter tucked inside a domino box. It's about a grandfather who got it right the first time, and a family slowly learning to catch up.

Written by Nicholas Quintana, Salida is a warm, funny, and quietly devastating portrait of a queer Cuban-American family reckoning with love, loyalty, and what it means to belong to each other.
