About this Event

This event is kindly being hosted by the Welding Engineering Technology Student club and they are providing food for the participants and attendees. If you are interested in becoming a judge, please send an email to [email protected]

The objective is to have at least 2 groups of SAIT WET students prepare a technical paper and present their findings for a panel of judges. Group size can be individuals to a maximum of two people.

The paper can be on any topic of their choosing related to their field of study: materials, welding, joining, inspection, etc. The paper must be original work completed by the submitting group. This work should include data or information procured by the group themselves and is not intended to come entirely from internet findings. Students are encouraged to carry over work from their in class projects as long as the work is authentic and completed only by the group members.

The presentations and papers will be judged by a panel of 3 to 5 judges selected from the CWBA Calgary Chapter organizing committee. The winning group and second place group will be declared at the end of the presentations.

CWBA Calgary Chapter and the CWB Welding Foundation will award $1000 to the best and $500 to the second place recipients.

*Total allotted time for each presentation including Q&A period is 30 minutes
*Each group shall submit their technical research paper to the judging panel for review on the night of their presentation
*Judging of candidates will focus on:

  • Technical content and originality
  • Style of presentation, speech clarity of each member
  • Handling of Q & A period
  • Relevance of conclusions to our Alberta industry
  • All members of the group must participate in the presentation
