Safe and Effective Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Adults

This exciting training program is offered by Coffman-Crothers Training and presented by Dr. Janna Henning.

This workshop will focus on: Increasing participants’ awareness of key trauma-related issues, helping them identify their clients’ immediate and long-term trauma-related needs and develop safe, practical, evidence-based/evidence-informed treatment approaches, and building creative skills to help clients adjust and thrive. Participants will gain the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to work confidently and effectively with trauma-exposed adults.

Responses to traumatic life events are among the most common issues clients bring to therapy, but rapidly evolving post-traumatic stress theory and limited access to formal trauma training may leave therapists feeling insufficiently prepared to work effectively with the unique and complex nature of each client’s trauma-related symptoms, strengths and resources, and their risk and resilience factors.

Participants will be able to:

1. Identify ways in which trauma-related issues may impact adults from a biopsychosocial-spiritual perspective.
2. Differentiate between common post-traumatic responses to single-event trauma exposure in adulthood (Type I trauma) vs. chronic interpersonal violence exposure in childhood (Type II/complex trauma) and evaluate diagnostic alternatives.
3. Identify and select safe and effective treatment approaches for both Type I and Type II trauma reactions in adults.
4. Apply the particular interventions best suited to address trauma-exposed clients’ unique needs and symptoms as part of an integrated treatment approach.

Dr. Janna Henning

Dr. Henning is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience in providing mental health services for adults with complex trauma, PTSD, dissociative disorders, chronic and life-threatening illness, and grief and loss-related concerns. She is a Professor in the Doctor of Clinical Psychology Program at Adler University in Chicago and the creator and coordinator of its Traumatic Stress Psychology Emphasis, which provides training in effective, research-informed approaches for clients coping with traumatic stress, death and dying, life-threatening illness, bereavement, and loss. Dr. Henning earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at The Chicago School. She is a Fellow in Thanatology (Death, Dying and Bereavement) through the Association for Death Education and Counseling, and a Faculty Member for the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition. She is the President-Elect-Elect of APA’s Division 56 (Trauma Psychology), the Co-Chair of its Task Force on a Trauma Psychology Specialty, and was the Chair/Co-Chair of its Education and Training Committee for over 10 years. She also provides trauma- and loss-focused continuing education, training, and clinical consultation, as well as self-care coaching to prevent and manage vicarious traumatization and burnout, for professionals who work with survivors of trauma and loss.

The Coffman-Crothers Training Program based at the Clinical Center at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale is dedicated to establishing and funding a psychological training programs focused on treating adults with complex trauma and dissociation.

National and international Trauma and Dissociation experts are consulted by Coffman-Crothers to ensure that the trauma and dissociation training opportunities provided meets the evidenced-based professional standards and best practices established by the American Psychological Association

Coffman-Crothers is committed to giving SIU graduate students opportunities for training in complex trauma and dissociation for them to develop the unique skills necessary to provide appropriate counseling services to survivors of trauma and dissociation.

Continuing Education Credits - 6 CE credits available

• Bridgepoint Psychology Center (BPC) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.
