A screening of new artists’ animation by Sarah Silverwood, Grace Lee, and Edd Carr.
About this Event

Animate Projects is pleased to partner with Grand Union to host Roam. Artists Sarah Silverwood, Edd Carr and Grace Lee have each made a short film inspired by the Right to Roam campaign movement, and its vision of “a future countryside in which people not only enjoy the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature but serve as its guardians too.”

This event is an opportunity to see these new films and to hear from two of the artists about their inspirations and creative processes. Sarah Silverwood (Grand Union artist) and Edd Carr will be joined in a Q&A with writer and campaigner Jon Moses, a member of the Right to Roam movement.

The films were developed through a period of research, supported by discussions with Jon Moses and the team at Animate Projects. They reflect on themes of belonging, ancestry, enclosure, privatisation, colonial legacy, access islands, mysticism and witchcraft.

These rich, mixed media animations have put environmental considerations and sustainability at the forefront of their techniques, and include foraged wood, cyanotype made with boiled oak bark, oak gall ink painting on paper, film developed in oak tannin, and archival imagery.

Entry to this event is free, but booking is required.

Content warning: Depictions of slavery and death. Viewer discretion is advised.

This event is supported by Arts Council England. Thanks to Fonic and Right to Roam. Please visit the Animate Projects website for more information about the artists and their films.
