About this Event
LA River Arts | www.LARiverArts.org
Join us for an afternoon of exploring the intersection of art, science, and community in the context of the LA River in the South Bay/South Gate area.
Starting at the University Art Gallery at CSU Dominguez Hills, we will have a guided tour and talk with Debra Scacco, the co-director of the multi-year research project , a Getty exhibit named for water that results from saltwater and freshwater meeting. The project considers the larger implications of in-betweenness, including issues of access, inclusion, ecological racism, and cultural/class system interchanges along Los Angeles’ waterways.
Following our gallery visit, we will head to the South Gate Museum & Art Gallery for their 4th annual Art Walk, featuring artists, live art, vendors and the last day of the gallery’s exhibit , a group exhibit that explores ideas of music and memory.
This is a unique opportunity to connect with the South Gate community and local artists as they navigate the long-awaited opening of the SELA Cultural Center, which will be housed right at the Rio Hondo/LA River confluence.
Let’s explore the history, notions and art of LA waterways, along with an afternoon SELA art walk.

River Sessions are guided site visits and walks to experience art, culture, and place along the 51 miles of the LA River. In the spirit of Hyonaayn’ar--a Tongva word that means both teacher and student--participants will learn about the River’s ephemeral histories and imagine it’s ecological futures, all while exploring diverse and dynamic cultural responses to the watershed.
