Ririki Haumaru Wānanga is the stepping stone of Safekid’s transformation and commitment to focus on the lives and future of our mokopuna (grandchildren) and the generation that come after.
We are aiming to work with the rohe, whānau and health professionals to learn from the matauranga of pūrākau (historical and experiences), oriori, mōteatea etc… in the regions to help inform and guide the wānanga and overall our safety messaging. We recognise that whānau and those that live and serve the whanau in the area who know what is best.
Purpose
Ririki Haumaru Wānanga is th Safekid’s commitment to focus on the lives and future of our mokopuna (grandchildren) and the generation that come after. It will set the tuapapa for the regions and act as building blocks to valuing the lives of mokopuna across all aspects of society. Importantly, it will shape the education and messaging developed for health professionals working with whānau when delivering mokopuna haumaru promotion and wharatanga prevention.
Mission
To collect and share place-based mātauranga Māori that will connect, energise and reset the messaging used when delivering home safety education in homes to whānau
Background
Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death and hospitalisation for children 0 to 14 years in Aotearoa, New Zealand. It is the mission of Safekids Aotearoa to reduce the incidence and severity of unintentional injuries to children aged 0-14 years old.
Safekids considers the differences that currently exist in incidence and outcome for Māori to be unacceptable. Safekids also recognises that changes are required to more appropriately support the safety of mokopuna Māori advancing Pae Ora outcomes (Māori and Crown aspirations - healthy futures for all), the recognition of this is reflected in Safekids’ Kawa Haumaru report.
Safekids have secured funding from ACC to deliver regional wānanga. These wānanga will engage with communities to seek local, place-based insights, mātauranga, pūrākau and expertise. Moreover, it will provide opportunity to feature regional specialists to share critical mātauranga pertaining to mokopuna ora, whānau ora and kawa haumaru (child safety promotion) that will enable a robust framework to community-led initiatives and messaging.
The wānanga will enable Safekids to explore with communities a favourable and strengths-based programme and parental practice models such as; a weaving, poi, carving and other traditional mahi-a-te-Rehia.
