About this Event
Professor Lion Shahab, from University College London (UCL) in the UK, is the 2024 Seelye Visiting Fellow, hosted by the Centre for Translational Health Research: Informing Policy and Practice (TRANSFORM), based in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland.
The lecture will chart the progress towards reaching the UK government target of reducing smoking prevalence below 5% by 2030. Anticipated changes in UK tobacco policy, successes achieved so far and challenges yet to be addressed, will be covered. Drawing on data from individual and population-level studies, experimental and observational work conducted at UCL and beyond, this talk will have a particular focus on harm reduction to assess the role of novel nicotine delivery devices in achieving smokefree ambitions, and to weight up the benefits and risks of increasing access to e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products and nicotine pouches.
Support for Professor Lion Shahab’s visit to New Zealand has been generously provided by The Ralph and Eve Seelye Charitable Trust Fund.
