About this Event
Volunteers help make all of our camps possible! When you register for one of our camps, you're signing up for more than a day on the mountain. You're joining a community of people who "get it" — a tight-knit community who knows what it's like to live with Type 1 diabetes every single day. We're pushing the limits of the disease in a safe environment, learning that anything is possible with T1D, and we want you to join us!
Riding On Insulin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by pro backcountry snowboarder Sean Busby. We've taught thousands of kids & teens with Type 1 diabetes how to ski & snowboard, surf and mountain bike since 2010.
What to Expect:
For on-snow volunteers, you can expect to join a group of 4-7 skiers or snowboarders for the entire day. Some situations will arise where we need to move volunteers to a different group based on camper’s needs and ability splits, so please be prepared to be flexible!
When you arrive, Dustin or Mollie will give you a group sheet with all the kids at camp and their teams and coaches. Your name will also be assigned to a group!
Each team is led by a Riding On Insulin coach, who carries a backpack with low blood sugar supplies and has a walkie to radio BGs back to home base. They will direct you if they need assistance with anything. For many groups, it will be staying behind to ensure all campers are accounted for within each run.
We use fun team names for each of the groups! The typical breakdown is below:
- Team Gluca - First-time skiers
- Team Bluebird - Beginner Intermediate Skiers (Levels 2 & 3)
- Team Powder - Intermediate/Advanced Skiers (4 & 5)
- Team Carve - Advanced Skiers (Usually 5 & 6)
- Team Freeride - Level 7
- Team Slin - First-time snowboarders
- Team Blizzard - Beginner/Intermediate Snowboarders (Levels 2 & 3)
- Team Stomp - Intermediate/Advanced Snowboarders (4 & 5)
- Team Shred - Advanced Snowboarders (Usually 5 & 6)
