George W. Bush governed the nation during a period marked by significant trials and transformation. His presidency was shaped by major events such as the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the global war on terror, the Iraq War, and the economic crisis of 2008. Over the course of his time in office, Bush experienced dramatic shifts in public opinion, at times ranking among the most popular presidents and at others among the most criticized. To reflect on this era, the Miller Center brings together two key officials from his administration, Margaret Spellings, former domestic policy advisor and secretary of education, and Stephen Hadley, former national security advisor.
In celebration of the Miller Center’s 50th anniversary, a series of special public events highlights the Center’s contributions to presidential oral history and the study of the U.S. presidency, featuring every presidency for which the Center has conducted an oral history.
