About this Event

Free and open to all.

As part of the Retracing Kampala project we will be screening and discussing the Riddle of Bakuli (2020) with the filmmakers Said Adrus and Daniel Saul.

Bakuli, a district of Kampala is retraced as part of a larger artistic project is a work in progress - a ‘montage’ of film, stills and sound. It draws upon artwork created during Said’s research for which the artist visited Kampala (Uganda), the city where he was born but which he left as a child over forty years ago because of the country’s political situation. He was displaced to Switzerland in the 1970s before arriving in the UK.

Movement, displacement, persecution, memory and migration remain urgent issues today. For Said, these life-changing events have been a key influence, like threads woven through all his corpus - reworking questions of postcolonial history, cultural identity and digital aesthetics in relation to contemporary globalisation.

Said discusses his research and working practice, and his collaboration with Daniel and LCC Animation students in the making of this film.
